Description
Winery: Edi Simcic
Date of establishment: 1989
Location: Vipolze-Dobrovo, Goriska Brda, Primorska
Winemaker: Like so many other Slovenian wineries, Edi Simcic is also a family estate. The founder, from whom the winery takes its name, still oversees things, but his son Aleks has since taken the lead in the vineyard. The passion for winemaking has been handed down from father to son, and they understand the art of ageing wine on wood like no other. The winery, which is located in the Goriska Brda wine region, was recently expanded with a new state-of-the-art cellar and tasting area.
Type: Dry red · 80% merlot, 10% cabernet sauvignon, 10% cabernet franc · 14.5% alcohol
Vinification: The grapes, which lend this wine its unique taste, come from older vineyards with a better exposure. They undergo a very thorough selection during the harvest. The wine is macerated (contact with the skins) for 14 days, after which it is aged for 3 to 3.5 years in new French barriques. Only the best barrels are selected for Kolos, and this wine is also only made in the best years.
Tasting notes: A deep red wine. As its name indicates, Kolos is a wine that packs a punch, with intense aromas of black fruit (blackcurrant, blackberry, etc.), a nicely integrated woody note, vanilla, black pepper, bay leaf and tobacco. A powerful but balanced, mouth-filling wine with a long finish. A wine with very good ageing potential.
Food pairing: Kolos is a tasting wine. Pairs nicely with very flavourful game and red meat dishes.
