Slovenian wine history can be traced back to the early Celtic and Illyrian tribes between the 5th and 4th century BC. These tribes had probably learned the art of winemaking from the Greeks. Current Slovenia was also a well-known wine region during Roman times.

The middle ages
In the Middle Ages, the Christian Church controlled wine production. Slovenia had also not been able to escape the grape phylloxera which ravaged the European vineyards at the end of the nineteenth century. Many vintners went bankrupt and sought other work or emigrated.
The middle ages
After WWII
When Yugoslavia was founded at the end of the Second World War - with few exceptions thereafter - the viticulture came into the hands of cooperatives. The winemakers were obliged to bring their grapes to the local cooperative. There they were mixed together with grapes from other wine growers, from which an anonymous wine was then produced.
The 20th century
As from 1987, Slovenian wine growers refused to do so any longer. They wanted to produce their own wine, under their own name, a wine they could be proud of!
The 20th century
Slovenian Wines offer a beautiful alternative for classic wines and wine regions. Offering equally impressive quality, caracter and tradition.
