Description
Winery: Krapez
Date of establishment: 1928
Location: Vrhpolje, Vipava Valley, Primorska
Winemaker: The Krapez Winery was founded by Josef Krapez at the beginning of the 20th century. What began as part of a cooperative had 50 years later, under the management of his son Josef Junior, developed into an independent, mature winery that follows its own approach. In the 1990s, the third generation of the Krapez family went a step further, bottling their own wine. Today the winery is reaping the fruits of this quest of several years for quality and unicity.
Type: Dry red · 100% merlot · 13.5% alcohol
Vinification: Krapez Merlot is only produced in the best years. The grapes first spend three weeks macerating (contact with the skins), after which they are pressed. The wine then spends 24 months ageing in oak barrels (partly barriques and partly large barrels). The unfiltered wine is aged in the bottle for at least 12 months.
Tasting notes: Full-bodied wine with an equally intense red colour. Aromas of ripe red fruit, blueberries and blackcurrants, a light woody note and delicate spice. A wine with good acidity to support the powerful tannins. Gains in complexity with time, reaching its peak after about 10 years.
Food pairing: Excellent pairing with grilled red meat, cured meat or more complex game dishes such as venison.
