Description
Winery: Edi Simcic
Date of establishment: 1989
Location: Vipolze-Dobrovo, Goriska Brda, Primorska
Winemaker: Like so many other Slovenian wineries, Edi Simcic is also a family estate. The founder, from whom the winery takes its name, still oversees things, but his son Aleks has since taken the lead in the vineyard. The passion for winemaking has been handed down from father to son, and they understand the art of ageing wine on wood like no other. The winery, which is located in the Goriska Brda wine region, was recently expanded with a new state-of-the-art cellar and tasting area.
Type: Dry red · 80% merlot, 10% cabernet sauvignon, 10% cabernet franc · 13.5% alcohol
Vinification: The grapes, which lend this wine its unique taste, come from older vineyards with a better exposure. They undergo a very thorough selection during the harvest. The wine is macerated (contact with the skins) for 14 days, after which it is aged for 3 to 3.5 years in new French barriques.
Tasting notes: Intense ruby-red wine with a complex nose of tobacco, liquorice and blackcurrants. The tannins are strong but ripe. A complex, elegant wine that can easily hold its own against superior Bordeaux wines. This wine has an ageing potential of 15 years or more.
Food pairing: Pairs nicely with a hearty meal, such as game or red meat.
